There are several things to consider when watching and identifying backyard birds. First, you will need a good field guide. Secondly, a good pair of binoculars will bring your backyard birds up close and in focus. And thirdly, you will need to follow a few pointers on how to identify that new bird.
Having a good field guide handy as you watch birds visiting your yard is one of the most important steps in identifying backyard birds. I recommend the Stokes and Peterson field guides, these guides and several others can be found at your local bookstore.
Take your time and choose the field guide that you find to be the easiest for you to use. Leaf through your field guides often to become familiar with the wonderful variety of birds that inhabit your Virginia Piedmont backyard.
A good pair of binoculars is not a necessity for the backyard birder but they will make identifying birds much easier. The mark of good binoculars is that they make you feel as if you are simply seeing through your own eyes, only closer. Only you can decide how much magnification you can hold steadily, how much weight is comfortable and if they work well with eyeglasses.
