high school principal was hired. In order to attract a principal in the highly competitive leadership market, it was necessary to offer full credit for experience. The new principal has 31 years of experience. Since the actual cost of the new principal was known for 2001-2002 school year it was included in the final budget.” Bill Clinton couldn’t have given a more confusing answer.
The question was: Why did the salary increase by one percent? The salary schedule in the 2001-2002 budget indicated a salary of $78,471.98 for 31 years experience. When I questioned the Superintendent on this he stated he really didn’t know how many years of experience the high school principal had. At the board meeting on Sept. 18 he told the Board the high school principal had 37 years of experience but did not indicate on what that figure was based. '
It is important to note that salary schedules for the school system stop at 31 years. After that employees receive a one percent annual increase. I’ll cover more about salary schedules next week.
In closing I want to be clear about the fact that I am not necessarily questioning how much people are being paid, but how those amounts are determined. It needs to be understood that in order to attract quality employees we must pay salaries that are competitive, but we must insure that we follow established policy in so doing.
