There is perhaps no better time. In the context of a more obviously violent world and in an October designated as Domestic Violence Month, Julie Portman’s dreamturned-drama, Three Roses, will he broadcast by PBS stations WOVE Richmond and WHTJ Charlottesville on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 9 p.m. and again on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m.
Three Roses was first performed at a sold-out Ki Theatre in March of last year, and has subsequently been revised and performed in Virginia and in other states. Julie Portman and husband Paul Reisler, who provides the play’s music, are in fact now on the road performing Three Roses in the Midwest.
A Cambodian who survived the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge; an American anthropologist who exhumes and confronts abuse suffered in her childhood; a child of the projects who grows beyond the afflictions of circumstance and of her body to emerge whole and healthy—these are the three roses, and their story and that of the dream are presented in a full length drama written by Julie Portman.
