Foxes are in the Canidae family, as are dogs, coyotes, and wolves. They do not bark like dogs unless they need to give a warning but they do howl and whine. Red foxes are not always red. Sometimes they look black or silver, but they always have white on the tips of their tails.
A red fox is about three feet long from its nose to the end of its bushy tail, usually only weighing 10-15 pounds. They look like they should weigh more but most of their size is fluffy fur.
Man is their main predator. Foxes are hunted for sport and are often hunted for their fur. They grow a thick fur coat during the winter to keep them warm. It seems that the more the fox is pursued the more tricks they learn to get away.
Other predators of the fox are bobcats, panthers, and wolves, but there are not many of those predators left. When a red fox is scared, he does not usually go into a den. Instead, he depends on his speed and intelligence to help him escape his pursuer. Foxes are built to be long-distance runners, with tough toe pads and hard nails.
