In recent years, Mary' Ann Kuhn has graciously offered her “Middleton” for the teas. Charlotte Nichols and Frances Russell provided the Tea and worked on other activities for many years.
This year, as in previous years. The First Baptist Church will graciously provide for sale box lunches of chicken sandwiches, ham biscuits, and other delicious offerings.
The purpose of this forty-six year old program is to support worthwhile causes both in and beyond the county. With these funds the women of the church have contributed to the Boy Scouts, county social services, volunteer fire departments and missions elsewhere such as the Jackson-Field Home for Girls, an orphanage in Honduras and many others. They have also bought many improvements to church facilities and buildings.
Their artistic products are gems of patience, ingenuity and creativity. Patience begins with many hours of growing, collecting and drying materials the entire summer. Some plants can be simply hung up to dry in an attic but most must first be carefully buried in clean sand or highly absorbent silica gel. The flowers collected vary from common wild plants as goldenrod, cattails, and butterfly weed to cultivated straw flowers, baby’s breath, German statice, zinnias, dahlias, roses, larkspur - on and on the list could be extended.
Jane Herndon has specialized in drying white zinnias. They also collect and preserve various leaves to provide bases or backgrounds for the flowers.
Ingenuity is particularly revealed in the choices of containers for the bouquets. In the early days Lois Snead and Christine Johnson heated old phonograph records in their ovens until the disks became pliable and
