The song, “Go tell Aunt Nancy the old gray goose is dead. The one she’s been saving to make a feather bed”. This song had real meaning, especially if they needed another feather tick.

After laying on the feather tick all night it would tend to flatten. When the bed was made, you could fluff the feather tick, and it would be like new again.

My children have fond memories of spending nights with my mother and sleeping in “Grandmas’ Feather bed” as sung by John Denver.

She would have the bed made nicely, and they would jump onto it, making angels on the feather tick just like you would in the snow.

Some families slept with a feather tick over them and one under them with covers on top. This made getting out of bed on a real cold morning, a real dread.

Each spring and fall the feather ticks would be put in the hot sun to help purify
