as well but this one works. The more you look at objects the more color you see. When I work on paintings I work on three or four, spending a few hours on each painting perhaps using one color.
In addition to being a painter I am a gardener. I’ve always been attracted to the simple beauty of flowers, especially when you realize that they have grown from a seed the size of the head of a pin.
RBP: What steps are involved in creating these flower paintings?
SW: Columbine, for instance, is done from a photo I took a long time ago. I put a dark base on the canvas, draw the image with a white pencil, then I add the color. It’s like painting with light.
RBP: So you need to know how to draw?
SW: Absolutely. That is the basis of any painting in my opinion, although a lot of people get away with being called artists who don’t know how to draw. For me that is the foundation for any sort of two dimensional work like this. I’ve always considered my illustration as practicing for the main event, which are these paintings.
I was so sad to learn that drawing is no longer taught at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where I studied. They all use computers to draw. There are no life drawing classes. We had a very classical education back then. We studied lettering,
