don’t even see what you’ve finally done until the masking comes off. With painting, the image comes alive in front of your face.
RBP: Which do you prefer?
SW: The oils. For 35 years I’ve created what other people want. These paintings are what I want to create.
RBP: Which painting in this exhibit do you think is most successful?
SW: Old Rag Mountain Fall. It has depth, distance and atmospheric perspective. I love landscapes but at the same time it seems like you’re painting a lot of green! That’s why I do something different on occasion, like Flamingos II.
RBP: Which one do you think is the least successful?
SW: View from Sycamore Hill, basically because it’s monochromatic and has no particular focal point.
RBP: Tell me about the seascapes.
SW: We often take our vacations by the sea. We particularly like Chincoteaque where you have isolation. That’s what attracts me but I also find water easier to paint t^han landscapes.
