Their diet changes with the seasons. In the summertime, when there are lots of bugs and fruits, foxes eat grasshoppers, beetles, crickets, berries, nuts, and grains. In the wintertime, when the bugs and fruits are gone, they eat small animals like rabbits, birds, turtles, eggs, and even dead animals along the road.
However, if it has a choice, one of its favorite foods is a mouse. They are excellent mousers because they can hear one . squeal almost 150 yards away. I see a fox hunting in fields near our Flint Hill home, when it thinks it has found a mouse, it pounces on it and grabs it with its paws.
Foxes will also eat your trash if they can find it. Many foxes are starting to live in and around neighborhoods. If they live near a farm they will sometimes kill and eat a few chickens. Many foxes live near people because they can find table scraps and other types of food in a small space.
Most foxes need a large living space or territory. They have a home range of one to five miles. Red foxes move over that range looking for food, usually hunting alone. They use urine to mark a spot they have already checked for food. It is like leaving a note to remind them not to go there again.
Red foxes can be very territorial, fighting other foxes that come into their area.
They rely on their sense of smell, eyesight, and hearing to help them find critters scurrying through tall grass.
