Now is the time for the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors to step in and take control of the situations. Active participation with Sprint officials is needed on behalf of all citizens. It’s time to get the foxes out of the chicken house. If necessary the county should hire a cell phone network expert to help them work with Sprint to develop a system that will maximize service to as many county citizens as possible.

At the same time they should try to use fire and rescue and county owned land in order to put lease funds into the county treasury. The county should consider purchasing property on which to locate towers if necessary. Other counties have built towers to lease to any cell phone company.

The tower at Clevenger’s Comer is a lease tower built by the SBA Company. A neighboring county is planning to provide cell phones to their elderly for 911 emergency use. Sprint wants something from us so lets negotiate with them to get the best deal we can. We may not get another opportunity.

As for towers spoiling our views in the county, we see many things that could be considered as visually objectionable but that’s the reality of life. We can’t control everything. It’s called freedom.
