The Sprint Company wants
to extend their cell phone network to Rappahannock County to gain new customers and to better serve customers traveling to and through the county. Cell phone business is profitable and there are many competing companies. If Sprint gets their network operational first they will have an advantage both in connecting new customers and leasing space ' on their towers.
Sprint pays a property owner $1,000 (plus or less) per month lease for a tower site. Sprint is willing to spend an extra $100,000 to build each of three proposed silos to replace their standard towers. They are prepared to build roads and to hide towers with artificial or natural trees and shrubbery or whatever is wanted. Name your paint.
For a year, Sprint at the suggestion of county officials has been meeting with the special interest groups (SIG’s) who don’t really want cell towers or the service they provide. The purpose of these meetings were to reconfigure the original seven tower network to overcome SIG’s objections to tower height, location and visual aspects. As a result of this year long effort we now have a new seven tower configuration that serves less citizens and excludes towers originally planned for fire and rescue stations and adds three silos.
However SIG people are still unhappy. We have wasted a year for all citizens and Sprint has expended time and engineering in an effort to try to please what they thought were groups representing the majority of county citizens.
