Again, with a meetinghouse atmosphere that brought people together, Rae opened Mountainside Market in 1985 in the building now owned by Trinity Episcopal Church on Gay Street across from the church itself. Here, her business thrived as the only local source of organic health food and supplements until she and her second husband, Brian Ross, built and developed Mountainside Market’s second site, moving the business to Sperryville on Rte. 211 in 1992. Even divorce did not dissuade this community business woman from expanding her horizons as she ventured out by herself to split off business ties with Mountainside Market and open Rae’s Deli almost six years ago.
Any single, self employed person raising a family knows how challenging times can be. But through it all, for the last 30 years, Rae has served her community well, with honorable business practices, with credit options for those who paid her when they could, and always with a smile each day to brighten the lives of others she served so well.
Congratulations to the woman who first brought organic foods to Rappahannock and educated the community about healthy eating. Whatever name you remember her by, Rae Gaedke, Jr., Rae Ross, Rae Haase, Rae will be an icon in Rappahannock history
