drugs online
While pharmaceutical companies offer mail service online for prescription drugs, an overwhelming amount of illegal drug information is available online.
Mercer advised that parents become aware that there are numerical equivalents for marijuana and alcohol being used online, especially in chatrooms on instant messaging. In fact, by simply typing the numerical code 420 into the search engine, Websites for marijuana are instantly at the fingertips of teens.
“Know the street slang,” advised Fauquier County School Resource Officer Corporal Otis Ellis, adding that there are many Websites that detail street and drug slang that is being used online.
Ellis also said that he has seen prescription drugs becoming more and more of a problem within the schools as well, with students buying and selling them illegally.
Not only have the Fauquier CADRE and the Warren Coalition seen an increase in prescription drug abuse, but also in over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
According to Diane Fisher, counselor/educator of the Warren Coalition, there has been a rise in the abuse of OTC medications including Coricidin Cough and Cold and Robitussin DM.
“Teens often refer to abusing DMX/Coricidin as robotripping or skittling, and Coricidin tablets are commonly referred to as “Triple C” (Coricidin Cough and Cold), Skittles, or Red Devils. Taking more than the recommended dosage is dangerous enough, but teens often wash down the pills with alcohol or mix the drug with Ecstasy or other drugs, which highly increases the risk,” Fisher said.
