The Goal

In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown (1607), the Virginia General Assembly Anniversary Goal targets protection of one million acres of land by 2007.

Public Support

The 2000 Virginia Outdoor Foundation Survey found that 73 percent of citizens feel it is “very important” to protect open space resources.

In a 2001 poll 89 percent of Virginians felt that “preserving and protecting open space is important.”

Eight-two percent believed that Virginia’s natural areas will soon be lost forever; and 65% of Virginia voters supported creating a permanent source of funding for protecting farms, forests, water quality, and open space.
