Joyce Abell, another concerned farmer, owns a considerably smaller piece of land, but has done much the same thing. Farming her 20 acres of land for 17 years Abell felt it time to retire. When she met with another aspiring young farmer she found a way to see her land continue to grow. Once growing asparagus, raspberries, lettuce and other vegetables Abell and her late husband sold their produce to local restaurants and markets. What is key about Rappahannock, Abell feels, is that it is a prime location for farming because it is close to larger outlets. Farmers markets have become a source for those living in the city who want to connect with fresh vegetable, and they seem to be springing up everywhere. Farmers in Rappahannock can grow their vegetable here and take them to the city to be sold.
