LEAVING AN INDELIBLE PRINT
In bygone eras, when people used to take a much more formal approach to many things, there was something called “mourning stationary.” During the nineteenth century, this black-edged stationary was printed in Britain for the purpose of providing mourners with an appropriate means of corresponding with friends, family, and acquaintances during the grieving period. In fact, the stationary came with the black edging in several widths, which gradually grew thinner as the mourning period drew to a close. Grey-tinted notepaper was used to increase the somber tone. In time, blackedge stationary fell out of favor, as it was not deemed to be in the interest of public morale during the First World War.
