Loss of working lands and natural resources has dire economic consequences as well as cultural heritage and natural processes implications. Agriculture directly employs over 235,000 persons in the Commonwealth.
Agriculture-related income in other sectors accounts for pne in every ten jobs in the state representing $19.5 billion in economic activity annually. The forest products industry produces 228,000jobs and adds almost $10 billion to our state economy.

Purchase of Development Rights programs are expanding in Virginia as local governments witness the loss of irreplaceable working landscapes and concern grows in the face of sprawl. State and federal funds are available to help match local funds for land preservation. Funding from private non-profit sources is also sometimes available for land conservation.
