The Grace Church Concert Series tops off its season on Sunday, May 22, at 5 p.m. with a unique entertainment presented by New York’s Four Nations Ensemble and guest artists.
Music by 17th- and 18th-century composers is mixed with 20th-century songs in a dialogue about longing, love, loss — perennial human concerns. From Bach, Handel, and Purcell to Bernstein, Gershwin, and Sondheim, the range of emotions from hope to heartache is fully explored. Entitled “Tbrch Songs,” the program goes beyond the definition of “a popular and sentimental song, especially portraying unrequited love” to include instrumental pieces. Director Andrew Appel has woven works with common thematic threads into a seamless tapestry that includes Couperin and Noel Coward.
