class has been studying the shelters and lifestyles of indigenous people with teacher, Maureen Day. After completing their lessons, they are now building a wigwam on the school grounds, in traditional fashion, similar to the ones Natives who lived in this area would have created. Native Americans of Virginia used specific methods to gather the saplings, honoring the life of the each tree they cut with song and prayer.
The children incorporated these traditional rituals into their building project where they used tobacco leaves to give back to Mother Earth for each tree they gathered. The children then tied the saplings together with twine in a dome shaped structure with the door facing east and have made stakes to hold it firmly in place.
