Sometimes it is called Poppy Day. In 1915 Moina Michael conceived of the idea to wear a red poppy on Memorial Day in honor of those who died serving their nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends, with the money she got going to benefit servicemen in need.
