un ounaay, May 1, Kichard “Freeman” Allan, a Vietnamera veteran, began canoeing 1000 miles from Southwest Virginia to attend the National Summit on Cuba in Mobile, Alabama, June 10-11. Allan lived in Rappahannock County for 15 years, and was part of the community effort that created Mountain Magic Cinema and the Rappahannock Association for Arts and the Community (RAAC). His trip began in a narrow Appalachian valley upstream from Saltville, VA, which was a vital Confederate logistics base during the Civil War. It continues into the upper Tennessee, with portages into Alabama’s Black Warrior, Cahaba and Tombigbee Rivers, and concludes in the historic port of Mobile the first week of June.
