Authorities obtained a federal search warrant and searched the premises on Dec. 15, 2004, he said. They found Colin Clem’s personal journals and photograph albums.
“The journals of Colin Clem cite numerous instances of illegal activity with respect to fish and wildlife violations in Virginia,” Lemmert stated in the affidavit. Dozens of journal entries documenting the alleged hunting violations, including unlawful baiting and trapping, are included in the affidavit.
Based on those entries, Lemmert requested permission to look for evidence of local hunting violations. Specifically, he sought permission to look for traps, rifles and “any receipts, cancelled checks, or credit card transaction records that could show purchases of salt, minerals, com, other grain, apples or other fruit that could be used for baiting wildlife.”
In the affidavit, Lemmert also sought permission to look for additional items, including animals that had been killed by Colin and •Jeremy Clem (Colin Clem’s son) between 1996 and 2004.
One of the entries, allegedly written on Dec. 23, 1998, documents the killing of a bobcat.
“Jeremy and Shawn hunted on the park above Flint Hill. Jeremy saw seven bears. Two big ones,” the entry states. “One was 20’ (sic) away when a bobcat jumped up on a rock 15’ feet away. It growled at him and then squatted down. Jeremy shot him with his 30-06. He has a lot of spots
