Annette Bening plays Julia Lambert, an aging grand diva of the ‘30s London stage in Istvan Szabo’s “Being Julia.” Winner of a Golden Globe award for Best Actress and an Academy Award nominee for Best Actress in “Julia,” Bening is a spoiled, gifted and much celebrated actress in her late 40s who is more or less happily married to a vain but competent and very supportive actor/manager (Jeremy Irons). The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and Community is showing “Being Julia” at The Theatre in Washington, VA, Friday June 3, 8:00 p.m.
Irons plays Michael Gosselyn, Julia’s director and manager, who is also, almost incidentally, her husband. Though they have a nearly grown son, their marital relations are, in Michael’s phrase, “terribly modem.” For male companionship, Julia favors Lord Charles (Bruce Greenwood), who declines to become her lover for reasons that become all too clear much later..
