Peak you will find another 4 ft. concrete post. To the left is a slightly rocky trail, with occasional blue blazes on the trees, that lead for 2/10th mile to a spectacular view to the north and west, overlooking the Bide Ridge mountains and Skyline Drive below. Compton Peak is composed of basalt and Catoctin lava that is millions of years old.
This viewpoint is a grand place to have lunch if you have brought a bag lunch with you.
Compton Peak was probably named for James Compton. Records of the Virginia Land Office have a deed dated 1747 for 10,000 acres to James Compton Esquire, one of the Commissioners of the English Navy.
The survey of this land indicates that it included whal we now call Compton Peak.
The deed was from the Right Honorable Thomas Lore Fairfax, Baron of Cameron ir Scotland, proprietor of „the Northern Neck of Virginia during the reign of King George II of England. The renl for this grant of land was “one shilling sterling for every 5C acres, due annually on the feast day of St. Michael the Archangel.”
