Okay, I am pretty certain that it is not a lizard, at all, but some form of spotted salamander. But, its color is so spectacular that it looks like an aberration of nature. I have been told that they were called spring lizards by the old folks because it was said that if you had one of these in your spring, you could be certain the water was good to drink, because they would not live in springs with bad water.
And, just so you know, in the context of this article, spring is not a season that follows winter. Spring is a hole in the ground from which water flows. That’s how we know that when Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water, they got that water from a well. If they had gotten it at a spring, they would have gone down the hill to fetch that pail of water.
