sissewa. I know it is probably spotted wintergreen, put pipsissewa (pip-siss-ah-wah) just rolls off the tongue so much better. And I have already spotted rattlesnake plantain. There will be more of that to follow. And the wild geraniums are everywhere.
I must draw your attention to one particular fern. Linda says it is maiden hair fern, and that is probably right. But, the amazing thing is how it looks against the forest floor, particularly when there has been a recent rain and the leaf cover is darker. You see, the stem of this fern is a shiny, jet black, and the tiny green leaflets of the fern seem to be floating in the air. It is gorgeous.
Enough of the flora. Last Sunday, on a hike in the Blue Ridge, besides finding some huge black bear tracks that looked like the model for the Boy Scout Manual, right there in the middle of an almost dried up wet weather stream, was a beautiful spring lizard,
