In the second play, “The Bear,” mayhem and madness soar as Chekhov tells a different story of romantic reality — that of a spirited, virtuous widow who is pressed by an unexpected visitor to pay off the debt of her late husband. He vows to stay in her home until the debt is paid. In the end, love somehow enters the picture and the widow winds up receiving an offer of marriage instead from a man she first found obnoxious, and they live happily ever after!
