The sun did shi^e on the Rappahannock’s annual Relay for Life.
The Relay took place just as scheduled Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning, May 21-22 at the Rappahannock Elementary School.
The walkers greeted the sun with a great deal of enthusiasm.
Opening ceremonies began with the Star Spangled Banner sung by three members of the Cheer for Life teams.
Chairman Ben Atkins then introduced Tamara Waldo, next year’s chair, who introduced the Relay chairmen and team captains. Richard Lykes and Ellen Timbers, two cancer survivors, were introduced and gave brief statements of “hope.”
Carolyn Leake, the Survivor Chairman led a brief ceremony in honor of the cancer survivors who began the Relay by walking the first lap.
The survivors carried purple “Relay” balloons and released them as they completed the circuit.
The Relay continued with members of the 22 teams walking the track.
At 6 o’clock the usual food extravaganza began in the cafeteria. Entertainment included face-painting, a clown, dancing, and plain old socializing and good conversation and fun.
Ibward dark, the luminaries in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of cancer victims were placed around the track.
