The School Board and Chappell favor an acrylic surface because the surface is much kinder to the runners’joints and bones, and it lasts longer and requires less maintenance.
Spieker track fund
Vice Chair and Piedmont representative Aline Johnson asked if the monies from the Ann Spieker Track Fund could be devoted later to the acrylic surface. That fund is named in honor of Washington Fire and Rescue Chief, former track coach and teacher, and long time supporter of Rappahannock Athletics, Ann Spieker. It is overseeing funds raised for the track through a “Men of Rappahannock” calender two years ago. The fund contains some $50,000. While less than ten percent of the cost of the track, it is a much higher proportion of the cost of an acrylic surface.
