This is just a short note to tell you all
that we—Bill Jarrett, Dave Kerr and myself—are back from the Katrina disaster area around Waveland/Bay St. Louis, MS.
The area looks like a war zone. The scope and size of the disaster cannot be captured by a TV screen - wreckage is everywere. People are dazed, depressed, desperate for help. Nearly all lost homes. A month after the storm, there is no electricity, no phones, no water to use to clean up. FEMA is just starting to reach this area. A few people have been given trailer homes, which are showing up on lots adjacent to wrecked houses.
About 70 people—amazing considering their homelessness and lack of communication—showed up for an open air Mass Sunday morning at St. Ann’s Catholic church. Tears flowed as Fr.
