school, which has a deck, and a slide, and a number of structures, doors and areas to climb around or hide. But “All the 5th graders have to go up to the top of the hill, and they mostly don’t do anything” Eton explained. There is a variety of recreational equipment up where the older children have recreation time, including monkey bars and a sliding pole.

But the equipment isn’t as amenable to such impromptu group games as tag or hide and seek. As a result there is more milling around and less play.

If possible, Eton said, “we want a slide and a deck and a climbing wall.” If that is too expensive, or will take too long, she suggested allowing the 5th graders to use the same equipment used by the younger students, changing the current policy of segregating the areas by age group.
