Jazz pianist
at Theatre
On Saturday, October 1 at 8 p.m., jazz pianist Larry Willis will give a solo performance at the Theatre at Washington, Virginia. He will play jazz standards, including Broadway ballads and old hit tunes — and he will play jazz interpretations of some of the spirituals and hymns he learned when he was growing up in Harlem. Willis will discuss the music and its background during the course of the evening.
Willis has played on more than 300 records, and has played or recorded with most of the. big names in contemporary jazz, including the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Hugh Masakela, Cannonball, Stan Getz, Carmen McRae, and Shirley Horn, to mention just a few. His most recent CDs include recordings by the Larry Willis Quintet and the Lariy Willis Trio, plus two solo sessions.
