Agents Carefully
Deicing salts used on pavement can severely damage adjacent turf and plants when the material leaches into the root system or splashes on the foliage. Salts can also cause soil nutrient imbalances, damage concrete and have a negative impact on wildlife and soil organisms. The safest deicing products to use near plants are those comprised of the active ingredient calcium magnesium acetate (CMA). This agent is formulated by reacting dolomitic lime, a common soil conditioner, with acetic acid-the acid in vinegar. CMA effectively melts snow and ice and is safe to concrete. Research shows that CMA is virtually non-toxic to most plants and has little or no impact on the environment. CMA is sold under a number of product names in discount stores, home improvement centers and other retail locations.
