Hearthstone’s first grade students recently started their mathematics study block with a trip to Luray Caverns. The students listened to fairy tales about gnomes mining jewels in the caverns. Upon returning to school, the students created jewel encrusted caverns from egg cartons and used rocks and jewels as manipulatives for counting and mathematics exercises.
The third grade class is currently studying Native American fables, reading poetry and learning native legends about creation, animals, the sky and turning of the seasons. Students have learned several Native American songs and recited poetry, and created painted horses and decorative vests in art class. Students created their own rhythm sticks from bamboo to accompany their songs and poetry. Support columns in the classroom were made into the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge with paper made to look like bark.
