1808, opening travel from Alexandria to the Shenandoah River. Other state-aided companies constructed a channel from the Dismal Swamp to Albemarle Sound and improved the Appomattox River for bateau travel between Petersburg and Farmville. A more substantial JamesKanawha canal system that would carry heavier traffic all the way beyond the Blue Ridge was undertaken in the 1820s, but funding dried up in the face of depression, and the project collapsed, not to be renewed for another decade.
