Frank Vignola’s
“Gypsy Grass”
debuts at The Theatre
One of the greatest young guitarists in the world today, Frank Vignola, is returning with a new all-star group of musicians to the Theatre at Washington, Virginia to give a concert on Saturday, February 3 at 8 p.m. The group, launched just last month, is known as Gypsy Grass. In addition to Vignola, Gypsy Grass comprises Casey Driessen (recently nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental) on fiddle, Matt Flinner on mandolin, Rich Zukor on percussion, Vinny Raniolo, rhythm guitar, and Gaiy Mazzaroppi, bass.
Vignola describes the music they will play as "wicked gypsy jazz, front porch jam, and bluegrass all mashed up and reconstructed by some of the nastiest pickers we can find." Although the group is new, Vignola’s interest in gypsy jazz music is deeply rooted in his attachment to the music of the great European jazz guitarist of the 1930s, Django Reinhardt. The liner notes to the Hot Club USA compact disc "Django Lives," recorded back in 1998, recognized that "Vignola's style has its roots in the ardor of Django Reinhardt. The characteristic Frank Vignola solo is — in the Reinhardt tradition — intensely rhythmic, but it is fed by a melodic sensibility that is all his own."
Tickets for the concert at the Theatre on Saturday, February 3 at 8 p.m. are $20 for adults and $5 for students 18 and under.
