Bill Metcalfe - the man who initiated the petition to have the neighborhood added to Washington - stood up and said he and his neighbors signed a petition to be annexed to the town, not just receive wastewater services.
Town attorney John Bennett said in most cases, town boundary quarrels erupt because residents outside of town do not want to be annexed and forced to pay higher municipal taxes. Washington is an unusual case, he said, because the town does not impose any additional taxes.
Council member Claudia Mitchell said residents of the Piedmont-Oden neighborhood should be aware that additional taxes could be approved by the Tbwn Council in the future.
