Cloniger said that he had returned to the crime scene to hide in the barn adjoining the house. Smith also said that Cloniger had told an RCSO deputy that they had missed him hiding behind a large tool box while deputies searched the loft of the barn. Deputy Daniel Coffey testified that Cloniger had asked him, “What would you have done if someone had raped your wife?”
Luke said afterward that he was pleased with the outcome of the case and believed that Cloniger had a fair trial. “My view is we don’t have a lot of murders in Rappahannock County,” he said. “If you kill somebody in the county, you will be charged with first degree murder.”
This is Luke’s fourth murder case, as he is in his 24th year as the Commonwealth’s attorney for Rappahannock County.
Cloniger will be sentenced by Judge Jeffrey Parker on April 19.
