Public Defender Bonnie Hoffman stated that this incident provoked Cloniger into a rage that was coupled with a strong level of intoxication. The defense held that these factors made the case a lesser offense of voluntary manslaughter. Public defender Jeff Adams also assisted Cloniger during the trial.
