Smith reported that a bill raising basic aid payments from last year’s $1,185 per child to $1,306 per child has been passed by the House and by the Senate Committee and is now before the entire Senate. If adopted and signed by the Governor as expected, the increase will mean Rappahannock will get a total in basic aid from the state of $450,064, a 26.51 percent increase over the $355,761 the county received last year.
If it goes through as proposed, the county’s percentage increase will amount to the fourth largest of any school division in the state, according to Smith. He noted that Governor Charles Robb (who made improved pay for teachers one of his campaign pledges) has suggested that 90 percent of the expected basic aid increase—or $84,872—go directly to teachers' salaries.
