Patrick struggled mightily to fulfill this dream. We know that there were many obstacles from his “Confessions” published much later to defend his mission to critics. What the obstacles were, we do not know. Patrick was not considered well-educated, his schooling having been interrupted by his years of slavery on an Irish hillside. He did become a bishop and was sent as a missionary to his beloved Ireland.

Patrick’s success as a missionary in Ireland was a true phenomenon. He came to a country completely pagan and left it completely Christian. Part of his success might have been because he respected the Druid priests and encouraged the people to preserve some of their customs and incorporate them into Christian practice. Frjom all accounts he was a straightforward, simple but charismatic man who had a quiet but compelling manner.
