With the observance of St. Patrick’s Day on the anniversary of his death each March 17, Irish - Americans celebrate a man whose life resembled a scenario for a Dungeons and Dragons game.
Born in Scotland about 385, before the Anglo-Saxon invasions of the British Isles, Patrick wai captured by Irish marauders and sold into slavery. He worked as a shepherd for many years for an Irish tribal king. During this solitary time, the young man had many visions and dreams. In one dream it was revealed to him that a ship was ready to sail and waited for him to escape. Patrick took the dream as a sign and did make his escape, travelling 200 miles to the spot where the ship lay anchored.
