taking Just a Tinch up the inside of the turn into the stretch and missed catching the leader by a half length at the finish.
Dr. and Mrs. William Wright’s Spit the Pit, ridden by Holly Mitten, was the winner over Rog Smithwick’s Just a Tinch, with Viveca Graham’s Useful Information, Charles Graham up, third.
Charles Owens' Cultivating, winner of the owner-rider hurdle race in 1981, looked like a sure thing again this year but was upset.
Cultivating and Jay Barr's Pill Mill jumped the first hedge together. Then Pill Mill led by a length over the next five hurdles, but Cultivating came back to leap with him over the seventh and was on top over the last three of 10 hurdles.
Suddenly at the head of the stretch Dr. J. R. Branscome’s Yellow Boy surged to the front and pulled away in the run to the finish to win by three length over Cultivating. Pill Mill was third.
Next was the owner-rider timber race for foxhunters, which proved to be one of the most competitive.
Jeff LeHew, son of Rappahannock Hunt's joint MFH, on his Lucky and Bold led for most of the two-mile, 11-fence 'chase. He was stalked first by Guardati and then by In for a Tag.
Lucky and Bold and Donald Shepherd’s In for a Tag rolled down the mountain together, leaped the last two fences head and head, and streaked for home.
