In the 1930's. Clarence Giles bought out his partner, and became the sole proprietor of the Washington Cash Store at the corner of Blue Ridge Avenue and Main Street in the town of Washington.
Until right before that time. Mr. William M. Stuart, father of William “Billy” Stuart, also of Washington, had operated a bank in the back of the store, lending money, handling checking accounts, and making investments in the I920’s. The date that he closed his bank is not clear, but before he had the bank in the back of the store, he had owned the whole business. So we may speculate that the name "Washington Cash Store" referred to the bank business and was- not just a name intended to discourage those hoping to buy their goods on credit.
