The first was a trip to Dachau, the nazi death camp that now stands as a monument to the millions of Jews killed in the Holocaust. Martin made the trip with two Jewish members of the symphony orchestra and walked the paths that men, women and children took to the crematoriums. "We were so moved. We were in tears. It's deceiving now — everything looks so benign. The ovens could have been potters' kilns. It made me aware of the thin veneer that separates civilization and savagry, of the evil that lurks within us all," Martin said.
The second stand-out was a tour through communist East Berlin. "It's so sterile there compared to West Berlin. Paranoia pervades the whole East German city." Martin said. "When you go through check-point Charlie, the East Germans check vour passports at least five times, scrutinizing your pictures and comparing'it to vour lace. You can't drive straight through. They've built in all these right angle turns. There are guards with submachine guns at every corner and more guards with guns and bonoculars watching from towers."
