Cinzano and rider Randy Rouse repeated their victories of last week and last year at the Rappahannock point-topoint races Saturday—but not without a battle.
In the featured Ben Venue owner-rider timber race, which they also won last year, Cinzano took off at the start, leading the field of four over the first three fences. Then Randy Waterman and his Worthy of Love overtook them.
Across the mountainside they raced, jumping head and head, with Cinzano picking up speed down the steep slope and regaining the lead. Uphill again he opened a 10-length advantage, but Worthy of Love came to him as they crossed the bottom toward the final fence.
Rouse heard him approach and let Cinzano out a notch, pulling away in the stretch to win by 10 lengths. Third was Peter Winants' good hunter First Jim.
It was raining all around, but not at Thornton Hill farm where the small and enthusiastic crowd of about 3.500 stayed dry until the end V l.
