Cardinal Command
The cardinal command of assertive teaching, Rojfe emphasized, is “Thou shah not make a demand thou art not prepared to carry through with...Don't get to the point where you say ‘If you do that one more time. I’m going to strangle you!’ because you can’t strangle them," she added.
As an example of assertive discipline style, Rolfe cited the teacher who catches a group of children talking out of turn and tells one she thinks was involved to stop talking. The child answers “But I wasn't talking. It wasn’t me."
The teacher’s response should be "I want it quiet,” Rolfe noted. “Who cares who’s doing it. You’ve reiterated what your need is" rather than being pulled into an argument with a student over who exactly is talking, she said.
Rolfe noted that teachers frequently .have trouble dealing with children who are emotionally disturbed or gifted, or youngsters who have inadequate home lives, expecting less in terms of behavior.
"All children can learn to behave. It’s a matter of choosing to." she emphasized. The youngster who comes to class with red eyes from crying because mother lost her job or dad died shouldn’t be excused from class work.
