Jack Miller of Washington was able to supply us with some more detail. Miller told me that Thurmond Lea originally rented the store building from Mr. Stuart, then left that location to build a store where Jenkins’ Auction House is now. It was shortly afterwards that Compton and Giles opened up in the vacant Washington Cash Store. The Lea store was eventually bought by the IGA grocery chain. It is presently serving as an auction house. The Washington Cash Store has stayed in the Giles family. Incidentally, Mr. Miller told us that folks who had money in Mr. Stuart's bank were never faced with financial collapse during the depression. “He never lost a penny,” Miller said.
