Rappahannock Nfwn Staff Writer The furor over hunting problems may have died down with the end of deer season but the issue has not gone away.
At last Wednesday’s meeting, the Rappahannock supervisors received a request from the board of supervisors in Culpeper County, asking for support on state legislation aimed at curbing hunting abuses.
Culpeper’s county attorney Charles Barrell reported that his board of supervisors have formally requested Delegate George Beard to introduce cased gun legislation in the next session of the Virginia General Assembly.
The proposed law would require all firearms in a vehicle on a public street, road or highway to be cased.
“I understand that the states of West Virginia and Pennsylvania have successful case laws which help cut down on the incidents of hunting from the road," Barrell wrote.
He explained that he’d deliberately included the word "firearms” in the proposed legislation since some of the problem hunters are now hunting with high powered pistols to get around a local ordinance which makes it illegal to carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in a motor vehicle on a public road.
