Hackley stated after questioning that Coates was not introduced as Johnson, but because he signed Johnson’s name to the check, Hackley assumed that Coates was indeed Curtis L. Johnson.

Since Coates lives in Culpeper Deputy James Michael Holt, of the Culpeper County Sheriff s Department was called into the case. After speaking to Hackley, Dep. Holt discovered that Coates had been accompanied by Faulkner and got in touch with Coates through Faulkner.
